SANDRA GERING INC. is pleased to present Big City Life Loveless, an installation of new works by Eddie Kang.
As an urban artist working in an often-overwhelming world of high expectations and exacting pressures, Kang finds inspiration and solace in childhood memories of sincerity, purity and entertainment. The imaginary characters that populate Big City Life Loveless reflect just that: Kang’s ‘happy place’, a world without malice. Kang, a young Korean artist associated with the recent ‘animamix’ movement, has built a reputation on this feel-good theme. His expansive vision includes paintings, sculpture, video, toys, sound & light works and combinations of each. It is not unusual to find stuffed dolls attached to paintings of dolls, for example, or humorous anthropomorphic forests in shopping malls. This variety, an animamix hallmark of sorts, has found footing in a post-Superflat, social media & retail-saturated world, and one that Kang expresses himself in an endearingly unaffected manner. It is the artist’s palliative to a world of adult responsibilities.
Eddie Kang was born in Seoul, Korea and studied fine art, film, animation & video at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. He has exhibited extensively in Asia, in gallery environments as well as public venues, and has collaborated on installations at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, the Seoul Arts Center, Seoul, the Abbazia di San Gregorio, Venice, the Wereldmuseum, Rotterdam and Times Square, Hong Kong. Big City Life Loveless is Kang’s first one-person exhibition in New York. The artist lives and works in Seoul, Korea. Big City Life Loveless was curated and organized with generous support by Christina Kang/Paradigm Art Company.
