Press Release

For Immediate Release:

GERING & LóPEZ GALLERY is pleased to present JOAN SNYDER, Symphony, an exhibition of works on paper from 1968 -1976 and recent paintings. This will be the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery.

In this exhibition, the language of music is very much in the foreground of a dialogue between early drawings and recent paintings. Motifs such as grids and texts resurface, and an examination of structure reveals that the artist’s past studies of strokes and gestures coincides somewhat serendipitously with a recent focus on these markings. Snyder has said that music plays a key role in her search to elucidate and bring to fruition a completed work. She states: “The breadth of a piece of music with its many layers, polytonalities, with many instruments playing at once, is something I’ve attempted to do in my paintings.” Furthermore, there are references to landscape, architecture, nature and figuration. These moments are also clarified by the organic qualities of music, a feeling palpable throughout the exhibition.

Joan Snyder began exhibiting her work in 1966, after receiving an M.F.A. from Rutgers University. She received the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1974, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 1983 and a MacArthur Fellowship in 2007. Her extensive career has included solo exhibitions at the Jewish Museum, NY, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY, the Danforth Museum, Framingham, MA, the Rose Art Museum, Waltham, MA, the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, CT, the Renaissance Society, Chicago, IL, the Neuberger Museum, Purchase, NY, the Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, NY, the San Francisco Art Institute of Art, CA and the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, CA among many others. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC, the Guggenheim Museum, NY, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, the Museum of Modern Art, NY, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC and the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY.
