Gering & López Gallery at CONTEXT Art Miami 2012

2012 CONTEXT Art Miami
DECEMBER 5 – 9, 2012

As a recent aspect of Gering & Lopez Gallery’s program, Street Art and its permutations have taken on a significant role in the gallery’s exhibition schedule. Graffiti, self-taught, graphic design and skateboard culture have all influenced, or have been influenced by, the four artists who will be featured in our 2012 CONTEXT Art Miami booth. Michael Bevilacqua, Todd James, Ryan McGinness and Steve Powers will be represented by recent work, each creating a space that conveys their preferred medium.

Michael Bevilacqua was born in Carmel California in 1966. He lives and works in New York City. He attended Long Beach State University and Santa Barbara City College, later continuing his studies at the Cambridge College of Art and Technology in Great Britain. Bevilacqua has exhibited internationally including solo shows in Beijing, Copenhagen, Milan, Tokyo, Madrid, Barcelona, and New York. He has also exhibited in group shows at Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France; Deste Foundation, Athens, Greece; The Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, AZ; and The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, CT. His work is in numerous public collections including The Mitsuni Collection, Tokyo, Japan; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; Deste Foundation, Athens, Greece; Astrup Fearnley Museum, Oslo, Norway; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and The Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX.

Todd James was born in 1969 in New York City where he continues to live and work. He has had solo exhibitions internationally at such institutions as Monster Children Gallery, Sydney, Australia; Colette, Paris, France; Lazarides Gallery, London, UK; and V1 Gallery, Copenhagen, Denmark. He has also shown in group exhibitions at the Baltimore Contemporary Museum, Baltimore, MD; Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH; The Tate Museum, Liverpool, UK; Parco Gallery, Tokyo, Japan; and at the Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy. He was recently featured in the exhibition Art In The Streets at LA MOCA.

Ryan McGinness was born in 1972, and grew up in Virginia Beach, VA. He studied at Carnegie Mellon University as an Andrew Carnegie Scholar. While a student, he worked as a curatorial assistant at the Andy Warhol museum in Pittsburgh. He has had solo exhibitions through out the world, and has been included numerous group exhibitions. His work is in several public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA; MUSAC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, Spain; The Misumi Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; and The Charles Saatchi Collection, London

Steve Powers was born in1968 in Philadelphia, PA. He is a New York City artist who at one time wrote graffiti in Philadelphia and New York under the name ESPO ("Exterior Surface Painting Outreach"). He took classes at The Art Institute of Philadelphia and the University of the Arts. In 1994, he moved to New York where is continues to live and work.
